Global Runway: A Combination of Cultural Couture

Friday, August 19, 2016

Hello all, and happy Friday!!

Yesterday, I had the profound pleasure of attending Global Runway, a unique fashion show hosted by Chicago's very own Latino Fashion Week and The Chicago South Asian Film Festival at VenueOne. With the intention of combining Latin and South Asian cultures, the event was a tremendous hit; appetizers served exhibited delicious flavors from both cultures, and ranged from ceviche, to sliders and fried artichoke (which I could not restrain myself from eating!). As the DJ spun his mixes, guests hung out by the cash bar and mingled before taking their seats.

The night's emcee, Bollywood star Manish Anand, charmingly hyped up the crowd and presented the first featured designer, Raaz. Beautiful evening gowns and Indian designs graced the runway as Raaz's stunning models walked to all the right beats. Here are some of my favorites!

Manish Anand

Co-founders of Latino Fashion Week, Arabel Alva Rosales and Cesar Rolon Jr., joined Anand onstage and mentioned the upcoming Latino Fashion Week days: Sept. 29-Oct. 2, 2016. Keep an eye out for tickets!

Also, Brazilian singer Cecy Santana sang a couple of songs with her guitarist before the night's last featured designer.

Rosales, Rolon and Anand.

Cecy Santana

After the performance were the extravagant cocktail, evening, and bridal designs by Elda de la Rosa, a local Chicago designer of Mexican descent. De la Rosa plans on opening her new boutique in Wicker Park, and trust me when I say you will want to check it out--especially if you're shopping for bridal dresses! All the dresses below are handmade and were absolutely gorgeous in person.

My absolute favorite design of the night!

Elda de la Rosa accompanies two of her models.

The night wrapped up perfectly as designers, models, and hosts--joined by The Chicago South Asian Film Festival's president and co-founder Amit Rana--closed the show on the runway. (Not featured: Anand's sweet, Bollywood dance skills.)

It was such a fabulous and refined night that felt way too short, but I cannot wait to see who's featured next at Latino Fashion Week next month! Hope to see you there!

Summer 2016: Part 2!

Saturday, August 13, 2016

After another untimely hiatus I am back and better than ever, babes!

I wanted to share some things that I became absolutely hooked on this past month... ready??

First off, I am in LOVE with Glossier's Phase 2 Set. I don't wear too much makeup, but their sets allow you to focus on the having the basics covered when you want to just be fresh-faced chic. I bought the Generation G matte lip in Crush, the Stretch Concealer in Dark, and Boy Brow in black, and I cannot stress how amazed I was at the quality of each product. The lippie is perfect for going on errand runs or having dinner, but since it's matte you want to make sure your lips are exfoliated and well-hydrated prior to using Generation G. I have dark circles under my eyes 24/7, but the Stretch Concealer has worked wonders on hiding those awful little bags; it's lightweight, does not look cakey at all, and blends perfectly with my liquid foundation. Finally, though I don't mess with my eyebrows other than getting them threaded, Boy Brow has been so easy to use in order to thicken, fill in and keep them groomed on days when they just have a mind of their own (AKA, always). I will definitely be checking back and seeing what other treasures from Glossier that I can get my hands on.

I caved and splurged again on a lip kit by Kylie Cosmetics. I already own Dolce K (the best deep, beige nude ever!), but I just had to try out Mary Jo K--which is truly the perfect red.

I was SUPER lucky to have found some precious Vince Camuto 'Sandria' sandals at Marshall's for half the original price, but you can find them at Nordstrom here. They are definitely my favorite summer heel!

I desperately needed new running shoes, and since my go-to is always Nike, I bought these Nike Flex 2016 Run--in black and white, as usual. Since they're a bit more straight on the side, it took a few days to break them in, but overall they're great training shoes.

Recently I ventured into the men's section at Target in search for a new night shirt, because we have to be honest here: men's clothing is sooo much more comfortable, looser, and generally made better than women's clothing. (Plus, it's always such a cute feeling wearing your guy's clothes!) I found an awesome Game of Thrones t-shirt that I love wearing to bed and got in XL but is no longer available in that size; however, I found this dope Hogwarts men's t-shirt in XL for fellow Harry Potter lovers and this Little Mermaid one that I adore. Since mine shrunk a little in the dryer, I might opt for an XXL next time so that it always fits loose and comfy.

Fashion and digital entrepreneurs Katherine Power and Hillary Kerr combined their intelligent, savvy, lovely minds to give women this integral book called The Career Code, and I have not been able to put it down. It's full of essential tips and information that every self-sufficient and professional woman should know (resume Do's and Don'ts, how to network the right way, etc), no matter your field or career. Definitely check it out if you've been looking for mentor-worthy info or if you need some extra guidance in launching your career!

My soul craves poetry, and this special little book of love and healing has nourished me in countless ways recently. I implore you all to read Milk and Honey by the exquisite Rupi Kaur, especially if you're going through a particularly rough time in life or love. Trust me!

And for those wondering: I nailed a recent job interview and will now join the CPS staff! Very excited for my newest endeavors and upcoming adventures at a nearby public high school teaching Spanish once again!

Also, I was very fortunate to have volunteered at the R U The Whole Package modeling contest this past Thursday at VenueOne. Hosted by the co-founder of Latino Fashion Week, Arabel Rosales, models from the Chicagoland area were invited to compete and win some awesome prizes. I had so much fun helping out, getting to know the event coordinators and volunteers, and meeting some truly fascinating people. LFW is having another event next week, called Global Runway, so if you love fashion and you're in the neighborhood, be sure to snag a ticket online and stop by!

Summer 2016 so far: peachy & productive!

Thursday, June 23, 2016

Hello dolls!

I've discovered the app called li.st and I must say, I've become obsessed! It's a combination of Tumblr and Twitter and yes, you're essentially just making lists. But it's really interesting how calm and organized you feel after you list reasons why you love something, why you're annoyed by something, or just write out your train of thought that is usually cut up after 160 characters. I strongly suggest the writers out there check out li.st--it's a great little writing exercise you can do quickly or in-depth. (And once you're there, find me @goddessonthego!)
I'm also ecstatic that it's been super hot lately, because that means no fussy layers and less clothes! Woot! I love just throwing my sandals on and grabbing my purse before heading out the door. DSW has a cute selection of sandals lately, and I could not resist grabbing these two babies:

G by GUESS, in brown and gold

Dolce Vita (my fave!) in taupe. You can find similar ones in many different colors here.

Summer means peasant shirts, but I've also got a crush on tassels and fresh, crisp, white linen (think: button downs in bright white). Any simple patterns for maxi dresses are a must, like so:

This one's from Ann Taylor, last summer, but I've got my eye on shirtdresses and off-the-shoulder dresses and tops!

Oh, and I must share these books: Love in Lowercase by Francesc Miralles and Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld. Love in Lowercase is basically a romantic comedy waiting to be produced; it follows the life of this linguistics professor who's brilliant but keeps to himself, until an unlikely friend helps him open up to the reverberating world around him. Eligible is a modern day retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and it's my current favorite. Paired along with some lavender vanilla lotion to help me de-stress, it's been a great way for me to ease into sleep lately, especially since summer means wacky sleep schedules:

I hope you're all having a fabulous summer!!

A fun post for fans of the O.C. (and astrology)!

Sunday, May 15, 2016

If you know me, you know that my favorite soap opera will always be The O.C. I usually do an O.C. marathon every year, so it's safe to say that I've seen it enough times to be an expert on each character, their personality, habits, and progress throughout the four seasons it woefully ended upon. Since each character is so different and unique, I started thinking about how much they represent the twelve zodiac signs. (Again, those who know me well know that I'm a huge believer in the signs of the zodiac).

Here, I've described and categorized each person according to what I believe is their sign. You don't have to take my word for it, but I'd like to think I'm very, very much into both topics to be able to confidently blend them in a special, totally geeky post about the show that made me fall in love with the west coast.

Aries: Caleb Nichol
This one was so easy to see from the get-go. Millionaire, play boy, frequent jerk? Caleb's got the money to do pretty much whatever he wants (#nofucksgiven). Huge family man, for sure, but once he gets an idea in his head, he's set on making sure he's proven right--serious warning to those who think they can make the king fall off of his throne.

Taurus: Sofie Cohen, AKA The Nana
Dedicated social worker living in the Bronx with a tough heart and even tougher skin, check. Patiently raised the ubiquitous Sandy Cohen, check. Stubborn to a fault, check. Nana Cohen is the adorable little Jewish grandmother that would make you laugh with her antics but also keep everything in tip-top shape while she's around. You'd probably hate your life if you ended up on her shit list (sorry, Kiki).

Gemini: Summer Roberts
Sassy, bright, witty, and fun, Summer is the quintessential Gemini gal that you'd want in your squad. She's a pro at multitasking her busy social life (candy striper volunteer at the hospital, covering for Coop as Harbor Social Chair, to name a couple), running the household for her even busier of a surgeon father, and being the sweet, hilarious friend and girlfriend that anyone would be lucky enough to have. Extra points for getting into the ivy league school, Brown University, and kicking major ass in her activism duties. Can you tell I have a girl crush?

Cancer: Ryan Atwood
"Punch first, ask questions later" was basically Ryan's motto in the beginning--but I didn't mind all those fights when he had biceps for days, a smoldering gaze and a broody bad-boy vibe. Still, Ryan Atwood is deep down a very protective, loving, sensitive guy who didn't have an easy childhood, so we can't blame him for his anger issues. I was ecstatic when the writers gave him funnier lines and a more mellow approach to life; showing dynamic characters like Ryan who undoubtedly grow as the show progresses always makes you feel like you can really connect with them and love the show that much more.

Leo: Julie Cooper-Nichol
What soap opera can exist without its overly-dramtaic, villainous, and smokin' diva? Emphasis on the overly-dramatic part (the woman almost killed two people, for crying out loud). Anyone who crosses paths with Julie is sure to get burned, but you've got to give the lady respect for getting back up after getting her crown knocked off her perfectly permed head, time and time again. She did a lot for her girls (and maybe a tiny bit more for herself), but there's no denying that Julie has the street smarts and unwavering charm that most of us only dream of having.

Virgo: Seth Cohen
Seth was my dream guy: sweet, intelligent, and unknowingly adorable. I don't know what it was about him and his neurotic tendencies, but when he had his nerdy moments, I knew I was smitten. Which is probably why Hottie McHotpants Summer inevitably fell for him, too: those scrawny arms, that Jew-fro, that babbling mouth! His love for comic books, indie rock, and skateboarding also made him the typical cutie most of us pined for in high school (if you weren't into the cliche jock, of course). Seth was also the best friend that Ryan could have ever been given on the show; their bromance was one that stood the test of time--through heartbreaks, deaths, and yes, even college.

Libra: Sandy Cohen
Oh, to be perfect... wait, there's no such thing as being perfect? Don't tell Sandy Cohen that! Sandy was the voice of Reason on the show; everyone--and I mean EVERYONE--came to him for guidance and support because, well, he's Sandy Cohen. He could make you feel like your flaws weren't flaws at all, or that no matter what you did wrong, you could always make it right. As a Libra, I respected everything he did for his friends and family (minus the Rebecca part) because he just wanted everyone to feel loved and accepted. Occasionally moody and self-righteous, the man still had a way with fighting injustices while also being the king of 'shmearing' bagels.

Scorpio: Kevin Volchok
You know that totally obsessive and could-be-hot-if-he-wasn't-so-creepy guy that keeps staring at you at the bar? Yeah, that would be probably be a Scorpio. Long-time nemesis of Ryan and self-proclaimed asshole, Volchok was the guy we loved to hate but also loved to stare at when he had his shirt off. His magnetic charm made him a stud with the ladies, and he was even able to sweep former O.C. Princess Marissa off her feet for a brief time. Trouble seemed to follow Volchok anywhere he went, especially since he was so fucking obsessed with revenge and making Ryan pay for God-knows-what.

Sagittarius: Anna Stern
Anna was part of the squad for a short time, but I honestly enjoyed seeing her quirkiness shake things up on the show. Yes, she was the girl who realized that she would only ever be the best friend and not the girlfriend, but Anna was astoundingly mature about it and peacefully realized her time in the O.C. was up. Kudos to the writers for bringing her back momentarily to--what else?--help Seth and his Summer troubles. Truthfully, I'll always miss Anna's manic pixie dream girl cuteness.

Capricorn: Kirsten "Kiki" Cohen
Kirsten Cohen is serious goals: a bangin' body at her age, sons who adore her, a husband who's madly in love with her, and oh yeah, an empire. Goals part two: she's incredibly modest about being so goddamn rich and she's genuinely kind to everyone she meets. I love how she ends up truly taking her role as Ryan's adoptive mother so seriously; her loving gestures towards her family and closest friends shows how loyal she is to the people who really matter at the end of a long, stressful work day. And Kiki would know about long work days--in true Capricorn fashion, she is a workaholic for sure. But that usually works in favor, and with her goofy guys to root for her no matter what, she is far from being an ice queen.

Aquarius: Jimmy Cooper
Jimmy was a true Aquarian as he tried to be a providing husband and father, but found out the hard way that his light-heartedness and boyish charm just wasn't enough to maintain the lifestyle he wanted. Jimmy resorts to his boat and tries to live a life of endless fun with Kirsten's younger sister, Haley, until he realizes that having fun 24/7 isn't all it's cracked up to be: somewhere down the road, we have to drop the Peter Pan "I never want to grow up" mentality and eventually become an adult. His absence from the show stays permanent when we see him and Marissa realize that although he's a great friend to her, he needs to shape up and be an even better father.

Pisces: Marissa Cooper
There is no doubt that Marissa had her share of problems (drinking, drugs, constantly picking the wrong guys after her breakup with Ryan, daddy issues); the fact that her character addresses all of these is actually quite commendable. Like any misguided Pisces teen, Coop struggles so much to maintain her former self while creating a new identity--one that breaks free of what society or her family wants from her. I must admit, at first I couldn't believe she was taken away from the show when she finally gets into her dream university and plans to take a gap year to bond with ol' Jimbo. But the impact her death has on the characters only shows her lasting impression we all got from her, no matter how much we rolled our eyes every time she needed Ryan to rescue her or when she'd find a new way to piss Julie off. Marissa Cooper was indeed the most complex character on The O.C., but her final transformation was the most touching one we'd ever see.

Hold up! Some temporary characters--the good and the bad--deserve a little shout out too.....

Luke Ward: Douchey jock Luke finally mellowed out (and ate a shit ton of humble pie) after his break up with Marissa, and when his father came out. (I also couldn't stop laughing at how Seth starting seeing how ridiculously dorky Luke was himself.) His tryst with Julie wasn't his best moment, but he turned out to be a good friend and decent human being in the end. Standing ovation for this leading Leo.

Oliver Trask: Another creepy guy obsessive over Coop? Scorpio alert!

Taylor Townsend: Poignant, perfectionist, and pristine, Taylor is for sure a lovely little Libra. How adorable was it when she only wanted to shower Ryan with affection?

Caitlin Cooper: Mini Cooper did a total 180 in the third season and completely broke away from the little pony-loving girl we saw in the first season; this edgy and rebellious youngin' even took charge of her mom's love life to make sure they still lived a cushy life. Still, she matured alongside Leo mom Julie and their bond was unbreakable. She definitely had Aries written all over her.

Johnny Harper: Aquarius Johnny was cute, friendly and talented, but his unrequited love for Marissa was ultimately his downfall.

Note: If you want to read more on astrology, there are a lot of books you can find on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. One pair of astrologers that are my absolute favorites are the AstroTwins; I've read their book "Love Zodiac" probably a hundred times now--so much of it is on point. You can also check out your chart, horoscopes, love compatibility with other signs and more on their website!

And here's a playlist with the best tracks from the show because, why not?

Freshly picked for you: spring time scents, kicks, and coats!

Wednesday, May 4, 2016

I can confidently say I am in love with Mojo Spa. Everything they do, they do amazingly!

If you read my last post, I mentioned picking up some goodies during their Alice in Wonderland themed party. I've been using them since then and wanted to share how well they've worked. I also included my spring wardrobe staples that you may want to add to your closet!

Light Twinkle Color Adjusting Mineral Makeup

★ ★ ★ ★

When the sales associate told me it was made with natural herbs and flowers, I was all in. Makeup companies try to boast about their "all-natural" products when really, you're getting the same generic and harmful products that you usually find in stores. With ingredients like white tea, everlasting flowers and chamomile, you can be sure that this little beauty smells divine and doesn't mess up your skin. I suffer a lot from stress and acne, but so far while using this product I haven't had any bad breakouts like I usually do. Sometimes I use it over a light layer of SPF moisturizer for a sweet glow, but I've also been mainly using it as a primer for my evening makeup routine. Thirty dollars seems steep at first for a small bottle, but I don't regret buying it for a second!

Vintage Rose Soy Cream Candle

★ ★ ★ ★ 1/2

Love, love this candle! I can definitely see why it's a bestseller. It smells like a beautiful, fresh bouquet of roses without overwhelming you. Also, it's such a great idea to use the warm, melted wax as a hand a foot cream. It goes on smooth, not sticky, and its scent lasts. I gave it four and a half stars only because of the size--I wish it came in a bigger tin!

Struck by Bliss Perfume Oil

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

"The scents of kumquat, pink grapefruit, quince, and bergamot combine to create a tart citrus that is both bright and warm and will leave you feeling refreshed and uplifted."

This little bottle is packed with such a fresh, spring scent! On days when I want to switch it up from my Marc Jacobs go-to fragrance, I just roll this perfume oil onto my wrists, base of my neck and behind my ears. There are so many perfume oils that Mojo offers though, and they all smell wonderful.

Struck by Bliss Goats Milk and Shea Butter Soap

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

I love lathering this soap and immediately feeling its moisturizing effect. The packaging is also a cute little canvas bag that I use to hold small items! It smells just like the Struck by Bliss perfume oil (above), which I like to pair it with for a longer-lasting fragrance. Mojo Spa even offers matching bath salts and a soy candle.

I also was able to update my springtime wardrobe: I stocked up on basic tees from Gap, crisp denim jeans, the classic trench, and the popular, dramatic trench coat.

Find my pale pink flowing trench coat from Zara here, Madewell off-the-shoulder cover up dress here, and Zara cropped jeans here.

Bonus: I fell for the choker's comeback. Find mine at Etsy here!

And if you're looking for a good, every day sneaker for the season, I must say that a bright, black and white sneaker has become my latest obsession:

The Nike Air Force 1 Low is out of stock, but you can find the Cortez (my favorite at the moment!) here.

Updates, staycation highlights & more!

Thursday, April 14, 2016

I'm so happy to finally share some recent updates! So much has happened since March, so I wanted to highlight some of my favorite moments.

I've been keeping the pace up for my continuous quest to get fit. My pants are getting SO baggy each week and won't stay on my hips anymore without a belt. I bought a couple of new jeans out of necessity, but I'm holding off on getting a whole new set of pants for work and recreation until I go down at least two more sizes. Right now, I'm between sizes, so I don't want to buy anything that either don't fit me perfectly yet or won't fit me anymore in the next coming weeks. On top of that, I also have the pleasure of digging through mounds and mounds of jeans at stores like Topshop and Gap because I specifically need petite/short sizes, so pants-shopping is sadly my least favorite activity for now--even though I do love shopping.

But progress is progress and, thanks to leggings, I shouldn't worry so much right now about not being a consistent size yet! My trainer is also noticing the huge improvements I'm making during my workouts, though I do still complain every now and then. But his new incentive of "whine, and I'll raise your reps" has undoubtedly silenced my complaints by about 90%!

Spring break= the best staycation I could have possibly given myself. I caught up on reading, writing, working out, errands, cleaning, seeing friends from college that never fail to make me laugh, and SLEEP. I even did an excellent job at keeping my diet balanced and healthy, although I had one tiny cheat day that led me to have some flame empanadas and café con leche at my favorite little spot in Noble Square, Nini's Deli. If you have never been, I implore you to check it out! Juan is the nicest server and guy around.

I've also been interviewing at different districts lately. After my first few interviews of the year, I felt like I was well-versed in my interview etiquette. The other night, I practiced in front of a mirror, had my thank-you-cards and envelopes readily available, and studied up on some facts about the school where I was interviewing.

Lo and behold, I got to the school and was floored at how amazing the campus, staff, and students were. It was round two of interviews, so I was there for three hours; but just like my workouts, no matter how tired I was feeling, I knew I had to keep going strong until the very end. And I'm glad I didn't falter, because I had such a wonderful time meeting everyone--even when I was interviewed by six people! In the end, I did fall in love with the school, but I'll still be extremely proud of myself no matter what happens.

In other news, my sister turned 24 last week, so we were all able to go out for her birthday and celebrate at brunch and karaoke on Saturday. Interestingly enough, our favorite emporium of handmade beauty products in Wicker Park, Mojo Spa, was hosting an Alice in Wonderland themed event the following day. Since she is a huge fan, she was extremely grateful that I got us tickets, and we had so much fun making our own teas and perfumes. They also had the most delicious finger sandwiches and sweet treats, and even had two actors play Alice and the Mad Hatter, both of whom sat at opposite ends of the "tea party" table. (If you click on the hyperlink above, you can browse their site and check out the yummy recipes used at the event!)

(FYI, I am definitely going to review some makeup goodies I got at Mojo in my next post, so stay tuned!)

I really couldn't be happier with the way things are going right now. Although I do get stressed out and anxious about the next two months, as soon and I center myself and just breathe, I can hear my intuition telling me that it's all going to work out in the end. I feel like that intuition is the same inner power that's inside of us, guiding us every time we want to give up. But as long as you love yourself, love the ones who love you, and stay true to who you are, there is nothing that can stand in your way of happiness.
